How Not To Perform Medicine Ball Slams

I've used medicine ball slams frequently during sports performance training, but there's a few laws that must be followed and remembered when practicing the exercise. For example, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Check out this video and you'll see what I mean.

That's AWESOME. I always have my clients throw slightly ahead of them where I catch it and toss it back just to avoid that situation. It's always hysterically funny to see it happen, though, when you're not responsible.

I see people doing this wrong all the time as well, even other trainers teaching incorrectly. I always cue by saying to bend at the hips and knees, rather than at the waist. This puts them more in a squat position rather than a dead lift, where your face is over the ball. Another cue that I use is to describe it, is to have your abs compress like an accordion, rather than hinge like a sit up.

That's a good cue. I often see these done, as you say, bending at the waist. Sometimes when you get a very aggressive client who really does put everything into it they'll end up falling forward or close to it. I tell my clients to stay in their athletic stance (one of the first things I teach them). As you say, it keeps them in the squat position.
